Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson

Ordained in 1993, Msgr. Geno Sylva is the Rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, New Jersey and the Episcopal Vicar for Special Projects for the Diocese of Paterson.
He currently sits on the Board of the Paterson Prep Charter School as one of its founding Board Members.  He serves as Chaplain for the Paterson Police and Fire Departments, the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department, and the New York Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He has a B.A. in Psychology from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.
He earned a Licentiate and Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.  He was a teacher, chaplain, coach and then President of DePaul Catholic High School and the founder of Young Prophets Teen Outreach for the City of Paterson. He is the Founding Director of St. Paul Inside the Walls, the Catholic Center for Evangelization and was the Episcopal Vicar for Evangelization for the Diocese of Paterson. From 2012-2018, he served as the English Language Official on the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization at the Vatican. In the spring of 2023, he was nominated by Pope Francis as a Member of the Dicastery for Evangelization at the Holy See.
